Gustave D. "Gus" Friesem

Gus Friesem married the late Doris Bloom in 1941 after serving in World War II on the ship USS Pride. They had two daughters, Ellen (Michael) Trujillo and Ann August. He was a grandfather of four and a great grandfather of seven.

Gus was the president of Midwest Marko Inc, a manufacturer of home furnishings. He started the business with his father Danny.

During the 1960's, Gus was active in the Civil Rights movement. He routinely traveled to Mississippi and brought African Americans from the south to Chicago and helped them get jobs and find a place to live.

When he retired, he spent most of his time in philanthropy. He generously donated to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. He also volunteered for Make a Wish Foundation, Lambs Farm, and Chicago Botanic Gardens. His passion for helping others rubbed off on his children and grandchildren. They actively volunteer, especially around the holidays.

Gus also enjoyed listening to music with friends. He resided in Highland Park for 55 years, where his house backed up to Ravinia Festival's music pavilion. He was able to listen while relaxing in his backyard.

Gus passed away January 21st, 2007. His humor and spark for life will be missed by friends and family.
